How to Choose a Scissor Lift for Indoor or Outdoor Work
Scissor lifts provide a safe, stable platform for working at elevated heights, making them valuable for construction, maintenance, warehousing, installation, and facility-management projects. However, not every scissor lift performs equally in every environment. Before purchasing a new or used scissor lift, it is important to determine whether the machine will primarily be used indoors, outdoors, or in both settings.
Choosing the right scissor lift can improve productivity, reduce operating costs, and help workers complete elevated tasks safely. Consider the following factors when comparing scissor lifts for indoor and outdoor work.
Determine the Required Platform Height
The first factor to consider is how high workers need to reach. Scissor lifts are generally categorized by platform height, which is the maximum height of the lift platform. Working height is typically higher because it includes the operator’s reach above the platform.
For example, a scissor lift with a 26-foot platform height may provide a working height of approximately 32 feet. Always confirm how the manufacturer defines platform height and working height before purchasing a machine.
Indoor projects such as electrical work, lighting installation, inventory management, and ceiling maintenance may require a compact lift with a moderate platform height. Outdoor construction and building-maintenance projects may require larger models capable of reaching significantly higher areas.
Select a lift that provides enough height without being unnecessarily large for the jobsite.
Consider Electric or Engine-Powered Operation
Electric scissor lifts are usually the preferred choice for indoor applications. They produce no direct exhaust emissions, operate quietly, and are generally easier to maneuver through warehouses, retail spaces, schools, hospitals, and commercial buildings.
Battery-powered scissor lifts also tend to have non-marking tires that help protect finished floors. Before buying an electric scissor lift, inspect the battery condition, charging system, and expected operating time.
Outdoor scissor lifts may use diesel, gasoline, propane, or dual-fuel engines. Engine-powered models offer the strength and extended operating capability needed for construction sites and other demanding environments. Diesel rough-terrain scissor lifts are especially well suited for outdoor locations where electrical charging may not be readily available.
If a machine will operate both indoors and outdoors, a hybrid or dual-fuel model may offer greater flexibility.
Evaluate the Ground Conditions
The jobsite surface plays a major role in selecting the right scissor lift. Indoor slab scissor lifts are designed to travel across smooth, level surfaces such as finished concrete. Their compact tires and lower ground clearance are not intended for loose soil, gravel, mud, or steep grades.
For unfinished outdoor jobsites, choose a rough-terrain scissor lift. These machines typically feature larger tires, increased ground clearance, stronger drive systems, and better traction. Many models also include four-wheel drive and oscillating axles to help them travel over uneven ground.
Even rough-terrain scissor lifts must be positioned on stable surfaces before the platform is raised. Review the manufacturer’s operating requirements and slope limitations for any machine under consideration.
A scissor lift must fit through the entrances, aisles, and other confined areas around the jobsite. Before purchasing equipment, measure doorways, gates, hallways, elevators, and loading areas.
Indoor scissor lifts are commonly designed with narrow frames and compact turning capabilities. Some models can travel through standard doorways while lowered, making them useful for commercial buildings with limited access.
Outdoor lifts are often wider and heavier to provide greater stability and platform capacity. Confirm that the machine can enter the jobsite and move between work areas without creating unnecessary obstacles.
Also consider the lift’s stowed height and whether folding guardrails are needed to clear low entrances.
Check Platform Size and Weight Capacity
Think about how many workers, tools, and materials the platform must hold. A small electric lift may be suitable for one or two workers performing maintenance, but larger projects may require a wide platform with a higher capacity.
Some scissor lifts have extension decks that give workers additional horizontal reach. An extension deck can be especially helpful when working around obstacles or covering a larger area without frequently repositioning the machine.
Never exceed the manufacturer’s platform capacity. When calculating the required capacity, include the combined weight of every worker, tool, component, and material placed on the platform.
Compare Tires and Floor Protection
Indoor scissor lifts frequently use solid, non-marking tires. These tires help prevent dark marks and damage on polished concrete, tile, and other finished surfaces.
Outdoor models may have foam-filled or pneumatic-style tires designed to improve traction on rugged ground. Although these tires perform better outside, they may be unsuitable for sensitive indoor floors.
If the lift will be used in multiple environments, select tires that accommodate the most common surface conditions or ask whether jobsite-approved tire options are available.
Review Transportation Requirements
Larger scissor lifts require appropriate transportation equipment. Check the machine’s overall dimensions and operating weight to determine what trailer and tow vehicle will be necessary.
Compact electric lifts may be easier and less expensive to transport. Heavy rough-terrain models may require a commercial trailer and specialized loading procedures. Transportation costs should be included when calculating the total cost of ownership.
Inspect a Used Scissor Lift Carefully
A used scissor lift can offer excellent value when it has been properly maintained. Review the machine’s service history, operating hours, structural condition, tires, controls, safety systems, and hydraulic components.
Look for hydraulic leaks, damaged guardrails, excessive corrosion, uneven platform movement, and unusual operating noises. Electric models should have their batteries and charger tested. Engine-powered units should be checked for fluid leaks, smoke, starting problems, and signs of neglected maintenance.
Whenever possible, operate the lift through its complete range of functions before making a purchase.
